Who Goes First?

Mark 5:21-43

Mark has been helping us to see, through the challenges that Jesus receives, that Jesus’s healings and exorcisms are part of overthrowing the old order.  Jesus calls us away from old allegiances toward allegiance to God alone.  Here, Mark tells the story of two healings.  He does it in such a way that we learn something very important about the new order which Jesus inaugurates, the Kingdom of God.

A synagogue leader named Jairus, has a daughter who is very ill.  He requests Jesus’s help.  While they are walking to his home, an anonymous woman reaches in to be healed.  To Jesus, she is just as important as the synagogue leader, in fact, her needs take precedence in this case.
