Outside Looking In

Mark 7:24-37

After a dispute with some Pharisees and scribes who had come out from Jerusalem, Jesus travels to the region of Tyre.  Tyre is a Gentile region, where Jews are in the minority.  Then he proceeds to the Decapolis, another region in which Gentile (Greek) customs are prominent.  In story form, this is a direct rebuke to the Pharisees concern with  uncleanness or contamination.

Who are the people in our communities whom we see as outsiders?  Are we willing to welcome them, or do we want to make sure that we are not contaminated by their customs?  What would Jesus have us do?
